Opportunities for Young Shutterbugs

If your child has an interest in Photography, here are two great opportunities for them.

The first is The Lycoming County Visitor Bureau's Photo Contest.  It began on January 1st, and continues through the end of this year, however in addition to the annual competition for best photographs , there are also monthly prizes.

Photographs submitted become the property of the visitor's bureau for use in the promotion of tourism in Lycoming County, which is part of what makes this ideal for emerging photographic artistry students.

The photographs must be taken of subjects within county lines.  Suggested categories are:

  • People (example – family riding bikes on the Pine Creek Trail)
  • Attractions (example – Hiawatha Paddlewheel Riverboat)
  • Events (example –Little League World Series, Lycoming County Fair, Apple Butter Festival)
  • Outdoor Activities (example – trails, bird watching, parks or wildlife)
  • Architecture (example – Victorian homes, covered bridges or statues)
  • Scenic Landscapes (example – Susquehanna River, Loyalsock Creek, farms, mountains)
Go to The Lycoming County Visitor Bureau's Photo Contest website for more details about submission guidelines and prizes.

Secondly, consider attending the Susquehanna Valley Shutterbug meeting.  The Shutterbugs meet the fourth Monday of the month at the Lycoming County Historical Society 858 West Fourth Street, Williamsport, PA 17701 at 6:00 P.M.  (When that date conflicts with a holiday, the meeting is usually rescheduled for the third Monday.)  The meetings are open to the public.  Enter using the side door.

The meetings are divided into two parts. The first part is a short business meeting to discuss club business followed by an educational program, which can range from an instructional video to a featured guest speaker.

The next meeting is this Monday, March 23rd.

Science Fair on March 19th

This year's Science Festival at Pennsylvania College of Technology is coming up on Thursday, March 19, from 4:30-7:30 pm.  It is held in the Penn College Field House and will feature a variety of fun math and science demonstrations geared toward elementary and middle school students.

With experiments designed to make learning fun, and stimulate children’s interest in math and science, this popular event was attended by a crowd of over 500 last year which featured topics as diverse as water creatures and hydrogen-powered vehicles.

The snow date for the event is March 26 but the current 10 day forecast shows little liklihood of postponement.
